Sabercats Sweep Day One of Finlandia Series

WATERTOWN, Wis. --- The Sabercats were sharp in their second consecutive home sweep, as they took down the Finlandia University Lions with two emphatic performances at Washington Park. MBU won 5-1 in game one and 16-5 in game two.

Senior brothers Adam Courtney and Caleb Courtney earned the wins as the Sabercats moved to 6-26 on the season. Defensively, the Sabercats were charged with zero errors on the day.

In game one, the Sabercats got off to a fast start, as Jordan Garrison slapped an RBI single up the middle to drive in two runs and give the Sabercats an early lead.

Garrison was back at it in the third inning, as he and Elijah May pieced together back-to-back RBI singles to double the lead. May hit a well-placed looper down the right field line, and Garrison knocked another smooth base hit into center field.

A double off the bat of Finlandia's Josh Gregory was the greatest damage Finlandia could do in game one, as Caleb Courtney stayed in command on the mound through six and one-third innings. Clint Matheis came in to close and earned the save. Matheis threw seven pitches and earned two strikeouts for a "good morning, good afternoon, good night" cameo. (5-1)

Garrison recorded three RBIs in game one and was one of five Sabercats to record a hit.

Game two turned into a slugfest, as the Sabercats produced more runs in the game than they had in any other game this season. Caleb Prigge grabbed an RBI in the second inning to answer a Finlandia run, then MBU came alive in the fourth inning to score four times. Dennis Reinhardt (single), Wes Wagner (single) and Garrison (double) all produced hits with runners in scoring position to keep the Sabercats in control of the game. (5-2)

Caleb Courtney's single in the fifth inning drove in Elijah May for the second run of the MBU at-bat. May and Micah Burdett both scored in the inning, as a leadoff double from Micah Burdett was a catalyst to restart the offensive rhythm for MBU.

Then in the sixth inning, MBU held nothing back as they scored eight innings to all but end the game.

After Finlandia gifted the Sabercats with three runs to start, a trademark RBI double from Wagner drove in two runs. A pinch-hitting RBI single from the rookie Caleb Huthmaker increased the inning run count to six, and Micah Shepard extended the inning count to seven with an RBI single to right. A late Finlandia error allowed Huthmaker to cross the plate, as the eight-run explosion in the sixth made the score 16-4 in favor of MBU.

After Garrison pitched one and one-third innings, Samuel Courtney came in to close and earned the save, marking a celebratory end to a celebratory day at Washington Park.

Garrison was the leading contributor at the plate, as he went 4-5 with four RBIs, two runs scored, a double, and two walks.

The two teams will be right back at it tomorrow, as they square off at 12:00 p.m. for a Parents' Day clash. This will mark the final games of the season for the Sabercats for the 2017 season.
