Yet So Far

WATERTOWN, Wis. -- It was almost the Sabercats' first-ever win against Edgewood College, but the Eagles stole it right at the death.

An 87th-minute equalizer from the visitors forced overtime, then their game-winner with just 50 seconds left made the already-cold day at MBU seem that much colder.

  • Result: Maranatha 1-2 Edgewood (OT)
  • Venue: Maranatha Baptist University
  • Location: Watertown, Wis.
  • Attendance: 120
  • Records: MBU (7-6-1), EC (3-11-1)

Edgewood controlled the game in the early minutes, as they tested the Sabercats' defense with five shots in the opening 10 minutes. So when MBU scored in the 14th minute, it was against the run of play. After Alexis Sponable sent Jaclyn Dahl through behind the Eagles' back line, Dahl had the presence of mind to cut the ball back onto her right foot, touch it around the Edgewood goalkeeper and an oncoming defender, and slot it into the corner from the top of the box.

The score froze there despite constant pressure from the Eagles. MBU managed to get a couple of shots on goal, but the Eagles out-played the Sabercats in the offensive side of the box score, forcing Hannah Wells to make a career-high 18 saves in the game - 10 of which came in the first half.

The onslaught continued in the second half for the Eagles, and the equalizer came with just three minutes left when the Eagles scored off a corner kick. Mari Hubanks sent a low corner in towards the top of the six-yard box, and Carrie Radomsky touched the ball to her right before tying the game from close range.

Neither team could end it in regulation, and as it turned out, the teams needed every bit of the overtime periods to decide it. The game-winner came when Hubanks sent a driven ball behind the Sabercats' back line into the path of Alisha Nolden, who made a run from the top of the box towards the six. Nolden slotted it past a well-positioned Wells for the heart-breaking game-winner.

The Sabercats had come that close to a truly noteworthy win, but their first-ever defeat of the Eagles will have to wait for another season.

"Close to our best win of the season and now we are left to face the sting of such a defeat," said Coach Dave Anderson. "Regardless of the outcome, I could not be more proud of the way the girls battled today. Tough conditions, tough opponent and we still had several players soldiering on. Hannah Wells deserves a lot of credit. She came up big between the sticks today!"

  • MBU: 5 shots out of 5 were on target
