WATERTOWN, Wis. -- Saturday marks the return to play for the Maranatha Baseball program. After the 2020 season was completely wiped out, it will be the first time in two years that the team has been on the diamond. All the team had to show for 2020 was six weeks of rigorous practice and a season-ending whiffle ball game. 

Only 4 student-athletes from the program's last game return to the squad, as a squad of 15 men boasts 11 new players for the season. And after practicing inside for six weeks, they can't wait for the weekend.

"The guys are super excited to get back on the field after last season’s hiatus," said Coach Gary Garrison. "It will be interesting to see how some of our “rookies” perform after such a long layoff. We can’t wait! Coming off the disappointment of last season’s cancellation, I am really looking forward to seeing how we perform in game conditions. We've been in the gym for a long time and there is only so much we can accomplish in that environment.  Being on the field will be extra special this spring!"

"We're just dying to get outside," said team captain Caleb Huthmaker. "Nobody wants to hit a ball or win more than we do right now. So we're just dying to get out and play hard and see what happens. We've only seen [a machine] for practices so the first game will be our first time against live pitchers. But we're just excited to go out, hit some baseballs and win some games.

"Our philosophy is 'family' - we want every member of the team to feel like a member of the family," said Huthmaker. "No one's going to feel completely prepared for day one, but we want to grow everyone as a team. And no matter what happens, we'll do it together."
