UW-Whitewater’s cross country course is a work in progress. That doesn’t mean that UW-Whitewater’s course isn’t finished. It just means that new features have been added periodically as the campus evolves to make the unique route challenging, but fair, for all runners. It winds through the athletic fields on the north end of campus, over wooded trails, over a moraine on the west edge of campus, around the arboretum and across a prairie.

The current course had its beginnings in 1985 when UW-W was set to host the WIAC championship, and a par course on the north end of campus, along with the large amount of available land in a prairie west of Fremont Street, provided the initial layout. Jeff Miller, UW-W’s cross country coordinator designed the layout of the course that was used, with minor modifications, for five years.

When Schwager Road was extended east to Fremont Street the course underwent revision again, with some of the wooded trails behind Perkins Stadium receiving extensive development and maintenance by UW-W’s grounds crew, which made it possible for the course to include another change of scenery for runners. The most recent change came in 2007 when Foster Track was renovated, changing the start and finish to a location west of Kachel Fieldhouse and making it possible for Miller to add more time on the woodland trails. The new start/finish location makes it convenient for teams, race management and spectators to use the facilities in the fieldhouse and Williams Center. UW-Whitewater is the only school in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with an on-campus cross country course.  The UW-W cross country course was the site of the 1985, 1990, 2000, 2009 and 2017 WIAC championship meets.
