Sabercats Drop Doubleheader at Berea

BEREA, Ky. --- The Sabercats' bid for a winning end to their spring trip was put on hold by the Berea College Mountaineers this afternoon. The Sabercats lost 2-3 and 1-8 to close a competitive yet winless spring trip against rigid NCCAA competition.

Dennis Reinhardt and Jordan Garrison took the losses as the Sabercats fell to 0-6 to start the 2017 season. With the wins, Berea improves to 8-12.

The first game was a pitchers' duel, as the two teams combined for five runs. After Berea posted a run in each of the first two innings, the Sabercats answered when the consistent bat of Elijah May brought home Caleb Courtney on an RBI single. (1-2)

Berea answered with a run in the fifth, then Caleb Huthmaker registered his first collegiate RBI by bringing home Wes Wagner with an RBI single in the sixth inning. The Sabercats proceeded to load the bases, but could not push another run across in the inning. (2-3)

The Sabercats tried to rally and tie the game in the seventh, but could not bring the winning run home after posting two hits in the inning.

Adam Courtney and Micah Shepard each logged two hits in the opening game.

Positives were hard to come by in game two at the Berea College Sports Complex. Berea opened with a five-run first inning, and held the Sabercats to just one hit in the game.

That one hit came with two outs in the seventh inning, when Elijah May singled and eventually scored when Berea booted a chance for an infield putout. (1-8)

The Sabercats will continue their season on March 31 with an away trip to Minnesota-Morris, where they will play three games over the weekend. Live coverage information of those games will be forthcoming.
