Sabercats' Cold Shooting Spurs Loss to Stars

WATERTOWN, Wis. --- In their eighth clash on the home floor this season, the Sabercats faced the Stars of Dominican University and could not recreate their Saturday-night shooting form, falling 62-76 while shooting 38.1 percent from the field and registering 20 turnovers.

Zach Terpstra led MBU with 16 points while Micah Shepard contributed a dozen. Dominican's Tim Robertson recorded a double-double with 22 points and 13 boards.

With the result of the game, the Sabercats fall to 4-10 on the year while the Stars improve to 9-8.

It was a cagey start to the game, as neither team posed any real threat on offense. seniors Wes Wagner and Zach Terpstra teamed up with Bryce Cashner for four points each, though, and the Sabercats stayed level with the Stars through the first 13 minutes.

A jumper from Mich Shepard with six minutes on the clock gave the Sabercats their first lead of the half at 18-16, but the Stars' offensive rebounding helped them snatch the lead back quickly, and they surged into a 25-33 lead entering the locker room thanks to a combined 22 points from Isaac Moore (10 pts) and Tim Robertson (12 pts).

Turnovers were also a significant difference-maker in the first half, as the Sabercats coughed it up 10 times compared to the Stars' five.

The Stars pulled even farther ahead in the early stages of the second half, as the Sabercats could not take their chances. Turnovers hurt the Sabercats' chances even further in the early goings, but they began to turn things around with nine minutes left, as Matt Gill and Cashner contributed key points while the MBU defense momentarily upset the Stars' tempo.

The visitors would not give up their lead easily, and the Sabercats continued to force and miss their chances. Dominican restored their double-digit lead after the brief period of MBU momentum, and would hold it as the Sabercats failed to connect.

"Overall, I was really pleased with our effort for the first 30 minutes against a very good NACC team. They showed more energy than we did late on, and we couldn't recover from their run. We missed some shots that I think we would have made if we had just relaxed a little more, but I want to give Coach Mark [White] a lot of credit for running a great program, and I wish him the best as the season goes on."

Robertson's 22 points and Isaac Moore's 20 were byproducts of an above-average 43.8 percent shooting night for the Stars, who extended their lead late on to take a 76-62 win.

The Sabercats' next test will be in NCCAA regional play: an away game at Moody Bible Institute Saturday, Jan. 28 at 3:00 p.m. Visit mbusabercats.com for details regarding the matchup.
