Six-goal Shutout

WATERTOWN, Wis. -- Maranatha called the shots this afternoon, as they upended the Blue Angels of Mount Mary University for their second win in a row.

Alison Hernandez notched two goals and an assist to break 50 career points, and Alexis Sponable broke into the top-10 charts on a celebratory afternoon at MBU.

  • Result: Maranatha 6-0 Mount Mary
  • Venue: Maranatha Baptist University
  • Location: Watertown, Wis.
  • Attendance: 59
  • Records: MBU (5-5-1), MMU (1-9-0)

The first goal came just over four minutes into the game and it was straight off the practice field. Sponable beat her defender to get to the right end line, and she passed it back to the penalty spot into the path of an on-rushing Hernandez, who finished with authority into the bottom-right corner

The second goal came 10 later, and Amy Montgomery needed no extra help. The freshman weaved her way through a couple of Blue Angel defenders and finished into the right side of the net to extend the lead to 2-0.

The third was a carbon copy of the first, and it was Hernandez that put it home once again. This time, Jaclyn Dahl used her speed to cut to the left-wing baseline, then cut it across the face of the goal to Hernandez. Hernandez made no mistake, as she finished at the near post for the Sabercats' third and her second.

Hernandez turned from scorer to provider for the next one. Hernandez set up Hannah Evans at the top of the box, who smashed her shot from 25 yards out into the top-left corner. At halftime, MBU held a 4-0 lead.

It took a while for Maranatha to score in the second half, but it came in emphatic fashion. Dahl found space on the wing about 35 yards out, and took it all the way inside the box and smashed it high to the near post to make it a five-goal game.

Sponable's top-10 goal came with less than 10 minutes left, as she collected the ball at the top of the box and slid a well-placed shot into the lower-left corner to make it an even half-dozen. Sponable's shot marked a fitting end to a one-way afternoon at MBU.

"Glad for another opportunity to give our entire roster game time today," said Coach Dave Anderson. "I thought each of the players came into the game with confidence and enthusiasm. I'm thankful to get to enjoy these moments with our players."
