LEAD

MILWAUKEE -- The Sabercats rolled to their fifth consecutive sweep and their sixth straight win this morning, blowing 3-0 by Alverno College without trailing a single point.

Maranatha swung at a precise clip of 39 percent for the day, and Claire Hansel and Gabrielle Carpenter notched a dozen kills each.

OVERVIEW

  • Result: Maranatha 3-0 Alverno (25-15, 25-14, 25-19)
  • Venue: Reiman Gymnasium, Alverno College
  • Location: Milwaukee
  • Attendance: 55
  • Record: MBU (16-3), AC (1-22)

STORY

The Sabercats got started right away, notching six kills in their first seven points to send a statement to their hosts. Hansel, Carpenter, and Karley Johnson found the holes in the Inferno defense to put Maranatha ahead in the opening stages, and Carpenter dropped the hammer three times in a row to finish off the set to the tune of 25-15.

After that first-set win, the Inferno was knocked slightly off-kilter, as they logged eight attack errors while being blocked just once. As Alverno was struggling to find a rhythm, the Sabercats were firing on all cylinders. McKenzie Janke was keeping the floor clean (14 digs on the day), and the Sabercats shared the wealth on the attack - MBU's 11 kills were dispersed evenly among five student-athletes.

MBU had no weaknesses, and Alverno looked to be heading for another defeat.

Offensively, the Sabercats saved the best for last. A team attack line of 17-2-40 helped fuel the win in the tightest set of the day. Carpenter and Hansel brought the heat with early kills, and Caitrin Kemlo and Kelsey Johnson joined in to propel a 10-3 run in the opening exchanges. Alverno put up some late resistance, but a decisive kill from Jessica Ureke halted the hosts' intentions at 19 points for the set. On the day, Coach Regina DeLozier deployed 13 student-athletes in the win, showcasing the Sabercats' depth yet again.

Maranatha had once again displayed their balance and precision, and they effectively doused the Inferno after just over an hour of competition inside the Reiman Gymnasium.
