THE LEAD
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Johnson's 36 hits over the 2 games of Tuesday's doubleheader were too much for the Sabercats to handle.
Micah Shepard kept his hitting streak going and Elijah May recorded 2 RBI on the day.
THE STORY
It took a while for the Sabercats to generate anything offensively in the first game, but the Royals got right down to business by posting 5 runs in their opening at-bat.
Chase White showed that he came to play, as he kept the Sabercats off the board through the opening 3 innings. In the bottom of the third, the Royals made good on White's performance on the hill, as they caught fire to post 8 runs in the inning. After 3 frames, it was 13-0 in favor of the hard-hitting hosts.
The Sabercats tried to come up with an answer over the next 2 innings. May and Jordan Garrison combined for a double and 3 RBI, but a 7-run answer from JUT both closed out the game and negated the efforts of the Sabercats' captains.
Johnson finished the first game with 23 hits for 20 runs. Meanwhile, the Sabercats stranded 14 runners in the 7-inning contest.
-----
In a similar story to the Lincoln series from Friday, game 2 was more of a pitchers' duel. Garrison and Noah Malicoat went at it through a scoreless 3 innings, but the Royals came alive in the bottom of the fourth, pushing 3 runs across in the at-bat. With the momentum behind them, the Royals scored 1 in the fifth and another 2 runs in the sixth inning while shutting the Sabercats out.
After a long evening of baseball, the Royals had successfully defended their turf at Morgan Field, moving to 6-18 on the year.
THE STATS
May went 2-3 in game 1 and recorded 2 RBI.
Garrison had 2 hits in game 1 with 1 RBI and a double.
Ryan Hempel also had a 2-hit showing in the first game.
Shepard recorded hits in both games, extending his hitting streak through all 4 games so far this season.
