Raiders Pack a Punch in Doubleheader Sweep

QUICK HITS

  • Result: MBU 3-25 MSOE, MBU 3-27 MSOE
  • Venue: The Rock Complex, Franklin, Wis.
  • Attendance: 35, 38
  • Record: Maranatha is now 0-14

THE LEAD

FRANKLIN, Wis. -- The MSOE Raiders plated 11 runs in the first inning of the first game today, and it was a microcosm of a long day at the ballpark for the Sabercats.

Despite being outscored by the Raiders, the Sabercats did what they could to keep pace with MSOE, but the NACC mainstays showed their quality on their home field. Elijah May went yard for the second time in his career and provided all three RBI in game two.

THE STORY

MSOE wasted no time in scoring runs, as they accumulated 17 through the first three frames. In an attempt to reply, Jordan Garrison notched his second hit in as many at-bats in the fourth inning, and the Sabercats went on to score two runs through a bases-loaded walk from Caleb Huthmaker and a sacrifice fly to right field from Cody Kuhl

Garrison capped off a 3-3 game with a double to right-center field in the fifth inning. May followed that up with a single to bring Garrison home for the Sabercats' third and final run of the game.

The three-run effort was not enough for Maranatha, as the Raiders' offensive explosion was too much to handle. A minor part of the story from game one was the Sabercats' season-worst 6 errors, which gave the Raiders a little extra push.

-----

Ryan Hempel got things started with a leadoff single in the first game, then May brought the fireworks to the cleanup spot with a two-run shot to left field. It was May's second homer of the season and the second home run of the senior's career.

MSOE then answered the Sabercats' opening statement with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. MSOE then piled on 10 runs in the bottom of the second and added a dozen more through the next two frames. The Raiders jacked three home runs off of the Sabercats, showing why they rank number one in the NACC in the category.

The only other offensive spark the Sabercats could generate was in the fifth when May took the brunt of a pitch to force in a run.

The second game more or less repeated the storyline from the first, as the Raiders successfully defended their home turf in a convincing sweep of the doubleheader.

THE STATS

Garrison led Maranatha with three hits.

May had two hits and four RBI on the day.

Hempel pitched in a couple of hits as well.

Maranatha recorded 11 hits in the doubleheader while the Raiders registered 39.
