Championship Bound: Sabercats Top Archers in North Region Semifinal

WATERTOWN, Wis. --- The Sabercats got off to a fast start and won wire-to-wire over the Moody Bible Institute Archers in the semifinal round of the 2017 NCCAA North Region Basketball Tournament by a score of 83-26.

Hanna Glaze contributed 20 points while Alexis Johnson pitched in 16 points and seven rebounds. Kelsey Johnson rounded off a good shift from the starters with eight points, seven rebounds, and four assists. With the win, the Sabercats advance to the Regional Championship Game, and improve to 14-11 on the year with a 7-1 record in NCCAA DII play.

Glaze kick-started the offense alongside Alexis Johnson, as the pair has done all season long. The duo pitched in 13 and eight points in the first half, respectively, leading MBU out to a convincing lead early on. MBU doubled Moody's score in the first quarter alone, as they jumped out to a 21-10 lead.

The Sabercats put out a strong defensive effort, as was noted by 23 forced turnovers by the Archers in the first half. MBU also had 12 steals and three blocks in the first 20 minutes alone.

With sharp ball movement and a 38.6 field goal percentage, MBU held a comfortable lead going into the break. (39-12)

A triple from Glaze extended the lead to 30 to get the Sabercats going in the second half, and MBU never looked back from that point on. Glaze upped her tally to 20 points - her third time with 20 or more points this season. Glaze and the Sabercats would register 21 points in the third quarter, entering the final act with a substantial lead. (60-21)

The last quarter was a formality, as the Sabercats led by nearly 40 points going in. With a strong contribution from the non-starters, MBU sealed out the win in style, limiting the Archers to just five points in the final quarter to win with ease.

Joylynn Molencupp scored her first collegiate points with a jumper just inside the two-minute mark. Other notable contributions came from Harmony Bailey (11 pts, eight rebs), Emilee Hansel, Maisy Alldredge (eight pts each), and Hannah May (seven pts).

The Championship Game will be at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow, and the Sabercats will tangle with the Lions of Trinity Bible College for the North Region crown and a trip to the NCCAA DII National Championship in March.
