WATERTOWN, Wis. -- The Sabercats were outgunned by the Marian University Sabres (NACC) this afternoon, as Marian took home a resounding 6-1 win from the MBU campus. With the loss, the Sabercats fall back to 2-3 while the Sabres improve to 3-1 for the year.

It took Marian almost 20 minutes to get on the scoresheet, but the visitors scored three in quick succession. Marian's Reilly Louko opened the scoring after she received a pass up the middle from Alexis Peterson. Louko made no mistake from just inside the penalty area, as she finished with precision in the lower left-hand corner. Not 2 minutes later, Marian doubled their lead through the substitute, Shannon Coughlin, who finished Carley Schmit's cross with a one-time shot.

The third goal came just 6 minutes after the first goal, and Allyson VanZeeland provided it after coming in off the bench. VanZeeland tucked her finish away at the back post after Alexis Peterson crossed it into the box. The assist was Peterson's second on the day.

Soon after the break, Alexis Sponable added her fifth goal of the 2017 season and put the Sabercats on the board. The freshman made an alert run forward and was played into the box by Alison Hernandez. From there, Sponable held off a Marian defender before slotting the ball beyond the goalkeeper to make the score 3-1. The goal was Sponable's fifth in as many games.

But the Sabres refused to take the foot off the gas.

Just 3 minutes later, VanZeeland put her second goal in the back of the net, and it was Coughlin who provided the assist with a well-placed cross. Only 6 minutes after that, Coughlin put her own name on the score sheet after collecting a pass from Louko. Coughlin's effort hit the far post before bouncing into the side of the net.

Marian's final goal came at the 75-minute mark, when the substitute, Erika Priewe, slammed the ball into the back of the net from a Briana Pawlowski service. The Sabres proved to be sharp around the box all day, as every one of their 6 goals had an assist attached.

"I'm thankful for the challenge Marian gave us today," said Coach David Anderson after the game. "I think we started pretty well and showed composure and desire through the first part of the match. Obviously, the game took a different turn towards the end, but I leave this game encouraged about our improvement thus far. Now the task will be to keep our passages of good play sustained throughout a full 90 minutes."

The next chance for the Sabercats to put a full 90 minutes together will be this Saturday at 11 a.m., when they travel to Madison, Wisconsin to take on the Edgewood College Eagles. Find details of the game at mbusabercats.com/composite
