Trojans Take Two

April 24, 2023 | by Ashley Nerat

LEAD

WATERTOWN, Wis. -- Maranatha falls to Trinity International in a well-played doubleheader (4-9, 4-14).

Teddy Haugen logged his second home run on the season, late in the first game. David Cripps and Tim Nickels both recorded a double in game two.

OVERVIEW

  • Result Game One: Maranatha 4-8 Trinity Int'l
  • Result Game Two: Maranatha 4-14 Trinity Int'l
  • Venue: Washington Park
  • Location: Watertown, Wisconsin
  • Attendance: 37
  • Records: MBU (1-22), TIU (19-27)

STORY

It was an evenly matched game early on as neither team scored a run through the first two innings. Trinity was finally able to make it on the board with a single run at the top of the third inning, but the Sabercats quickly answered back with run of their own to tie things up 1-1.

The fifth and sixth inning is where the Trojans found their spark, getting a combined nine hits which led to seven more runs to extend their lead. Teddy Haugen gave his team a crooked number at the bottom of the seventh inning with a two RBI home run; his second on the season. Unfortunatley it was not enough to keep the game going and Trinity took game one 9-4.

Game two had a similar look at the bat, with both teams recording one hit more than they did in the first game (15 TIU, 10 MBU). But unlike in game one, Trinity had a much faster start, earning seven unanswered runs in the first three inning.

Judson Martin was finally able to give the Sabercats a boost of energy after an RBI single hit to right field. Martin was not left on base long, as a few wild throws from the Trojans brought him home bringing the score to 7-2.

Over the next two innings, Trinity brought home another seven runs to put the game pretty far out of reach for Maranatha. Although the Sabercats tried their best, bringing in two more runs at the bottom of the sixth, they ultimately could not close the gap and fell 4-14.

Maranatha will look to finish their season off on a high note this Saturday when they face Wisconsin Lutheran in a doubleheader.
