WATERTOWN, Wis. -- Friday sees the Sabercats Baseball Team return to action with their annual spring trip, as the team eagerly awaits the chance to finally get outside, face live pitchers, and be able to take a real field after practicing inside since February 1.

The team will be on the road for most of the season before wrapping up a 32-game schedule with four home doubleheaders in late April. Of course, a spring schedule in southeastern Wisconsin is always "subject to change" without notice.

The 2023 season is a landmark year for the program, as head coach Gary Garrison announced that he will coach his 16th and final season.

For Garrison, the focus remains the same: on the leadership development of his players.

"The guys have exhibited a strong work ethic," Garrison said. "There has also been a lot of bonding taking place. The incoming freshmen - there are 7 of them - have brought a lot of energy to the team. Great team unity so far!

"We have already had to deal with guys not being able to play due to injury or ineligibility. That has limited the roster size. However, the incoming Freshman class has a huge amount of potential. We just need to have them develop quickly into high-level contributors. Several of them are going to play key roles on the team this season.

"Of course, I’d like to break the school record for wins in a season," Garrison concluded. "But my primary goal is to see each of [the players] develop into the Spiritual leaders that they need to be.  On the field, I’d like to see each of them take strides this season as they prepare for their roles in the coming years."

Head Coach Gary Garrison is joined by assistant coaches Clint Matheis, Steve Board, and Tim Mielke while Ty Smith and David Cripps step into the captain roles for the 2023 season.
