Sabercats Slay Red Lions in Overtime

WATERTOWN, Wis. --- In an electric 45 minutes of basketball, the Sabercats came from behind to grind out a 95-90 overtime win over their NCCAA DI opponents Lincoln Christian in a Parents' Night matchup. Clayton Morrison was clutch down the stretch and marked a career-high 18 points on the night, and Micah Shepard helped seal the win by making six of six shots from the free throw line in the overtime period.

The Sabercats move to 9-15 on the year with the win.

The first half was a battle from the get-go, as the competitiveness of both teams made for a tight opening exchange. The Red Lions looked like they would not give the Sabercats a shot at revenge for their previous loss to LCU this season, as an up-tempo offense forced the Sabercats to stay tight and active defensively.

MBU boasted a well-balanced offense of their own, but the efforts of the home team were not enough to procure a lead, as the Red Lions kept the Sabercats frustrated with determined play in the lane. LCU hauled in six offensive rebounds and shot 53 percent from the field - marking superior figures in each category.

Kiandrecus Broussard made it a two-possession game with a quick steal and a bucket, and Richard Medina pulled the Sabercats to within four points with a three-point play with just over two minutes remaining.

LCU maintained their edge until the halftime break, and held a four-point lead going into the locker room. (37-41)

Medina led eight different MBU scorers with eight points in the first half, and gave the Sabercats' the lead early in the second half - their first lead since the game was established.

Medina's bucket sparked a tight exchange in which neither team gave the other a significant lead. Broussard and Jones contributed as subs, but it remained a one-possession game until the 8:30 mark, when LCU went up four points. Soon after, Terpstra connected with a layup and Shepard completed a three-point play to give MBU the lead once again at 61-60.

LCU restored their lead to 69-76 and seemed to be heading to the win with just 110 seconds left, but Morrison and the Sabercats had other plans.

Morrison knocked down a three-point shot and turned a steal into a layup to single-handedly make it a two-point game with 90 seconds left. The senior then answered two LCU points with another three-pointer to make it a one-point game inside the final minute. A free throw from Micah Shepard tied the game at 78 - a result that would hold until the final horn.

In the overtime period, the Sabercats came out flying.

Shepard started MBU off with a jumper, then Medina slam-dunked on a fast break to bring the gym's energy levels to a nightly high. When Medina made a layup less than a minute later, the Sabercats held a five-point lead, which they would hold through key free throws from Shepard, who knocked down all six of his shots from the line to seal the win for MBU.

"Lincoln is a great team - they have great years in front of them," said head coach Keith Salscheider. "They executed their game plan well, and we were fortunate to stick to our game plan to come from behind, tie the game, and force overtime. Once we consistently put out more effort than they did on the floor, we were a tough team to beat. Each of our senior captains really stepped into their roles tonight, and that is the way we want to be playing at the end of the season."

The Sabercats will have one more test before the NCCAA North Regional Tournament. Tuesday night, MBU will travel to Illinois Tech to take on the Scarlet Hawks. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. central.
