Scarlet Hawks Tame Sabercats in Regular-Season Finale

CHICAGO --- The Sabercats' progress with results was stymied at the hands of Illinois Tech by a score of 50-78 on a Tuesday night in the Windy City. IIT hauled in 47 boards to MBU's 26 to capture the win on their home floor.

Micah Shepard led the Sabercats with 16 points and was backed up by four points and seven rebounds from Matt Gill. With the loss, MBU finishes the regular season with a 9-16 record.

Coach Keith Salscheider gave the entire Sabercats team significant minutes in the loss, as everyone was able to contribute in the final regular-season contest.

Shepard put the game's first points on the board 20 seconds into the game, but that was the only lead that MBU would hold on the night. Illinois Tech kept the game in control with a well-balanced offense - as was evidenced by four different players in double-digit points to end the night.

IIT maintained a lead of 10 or more points through the majority of the first half, as they rode the momentum of 26 rebounds to MBU's 11. IIT's 10 offensive rebounds helped them control the flow of the game and keep MBU on their heels defensively. Shepard began his contribution with 11 points in the opening half.

After the opening 20 minutes, IIT held a 27-44 lead.

The second half held a similar story, and IIT just extended their lead to the end of the game.

Micah Shepard led a sparse scoring effort with five points in the second half while Richard Medina and Matt Gill chipped in four points. Adam Love and Justin Blake each registered three points from off of the bench.

IIT extended their lead to a game-high 29 points with a little over three minutes remaining, and closed out the 50-78 win.

With the regular season behind them, the Sabercats look forward to Thursday night and the NCCAA North Region Tournament. MBU opens play at 8:00 p.m. against Oak Hills Christian College.
