Sabercats Top Wolfpack, Move on to Semifinal

WATERTOWN, Wis. --- In front of an energetic crowd on Thursday night, the Sabercats dispatched the Oak Hills Chrsitian College Wolfpack after a hot start, winning by a score of 101-64.

Micah Shepard led MBU with a double-double of 26 points and 10 boards while Richard Medina contributed 18 points and six assists on the night. Clayton Morrison added four points and nine assists while Wes Wagner (12 pts, nine rebounds) and Justin Blake (12 pts, eight rebounds) rounded out a versatile MBU offense.

This marks the 10th win for the Sabercats this season, and they move on to the semifinal of the 2017 NCCAA North Regional Tournament tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m..

Medina got everything started with a dunk on the fast break early on, and he was backed up by Wes Wagner, who converted his 500th career point with a routine layup early on. Medina would go on to be a danger man, as the freshman did not miss a shot en route to posting 17 points in the first half.

Quick ball movement opened the game up for MBU, who converted five shots from downtown in the opening minutes - four of those came from the hands of Micah Shepard, who did not need the luxury of the extra time and space. Just like that, MBU had built a 15-point lead to start the game.

Oak Hills showed that they were a shooting team early on, as three-point shots characterized the visitors' efforts to stay competitive.

The Sabercats were effective in keeping the Wolfpack at bay through an up-tempo offense, but MBU still allowed Oak Hills to convert 37 points in the opening half.

Medina's 17-point total was complimented by Shepard, who added 14 in the first half to boost the Sabercats to a 20-point lead. (57-37)

Shepard sparked the offense early in the second half with eight points and a thread-the-needle assist, leading a balanced offensive effort that stayed well ahead of the Wolfpack through most of the second half. Justin Blake put his prowess in the paint to good use, posting 10 points and eight rebounds on the game. A smooth three from CJ Jones then jumped the lead to 30 points with under 10 minutes to play.

The bench came in to finish the job, as Jones (nine points) and Bryce Nelson (five points) highlighted the effort from the non-starters in the second half. It was Nelseon that put the Sabercats at the century mark by grabbing an offensive rebound and finishing the chance, and Kevin Risma (another fan favorite) knocked down a free throw to put the finishing touches on an electric night at MBU. (101-64)

With coach Keith Salscheider out with illness, assistant coach Joel Borchardt was at the helm for the Sabercats' win. With the win, MBU moves to 10-16 on the season.

"Props to our guys - they played an excellent game tonight," said Borchardt after the game. "We were a bit tentative at the end, but we came out ready to play. It was a good game for us, and it was nice to see us come out with fire and aggresiveness. We played a great team game - Clayton [Morrison] had nine assists which was outstanding, and we all just looked for the extra pass tonight. We are looking forward to tomorrow's game, and we look to keep playing the way we have been and to glorify God in the way we play."

With the win, the Sabercats move on to tomorrow night and the regional semifinal against the #1-seeded Lions of Trinity Bible College. Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m. on the MBU campus.
