Winning Weekend

MANITOWOC, Wis. -- After some tough losses last week, the Sabercats rebounded with two decisive wins this afternoon near the shores of Lake Michigan.

MBU defeated Grace Christian University and Silver Lake College in straight sets, and the Sabercats' defense allowed fewer than 15 points per set on the day. Kelsey Johnson passed the 500 career kills with her performance on the day.

  • Results:
    • Maranatha 3-0 Grace (25-12, 25-13, 25-18)
    • Maranatha 3-0 Silver Lake (25-14, 25-13, 25-17)
  • Venue: UW-Manitowoc Fieldhouse
  • Location: Manitowoc, Wis.
  • Record: MBU (13-9)

The Sabercats faced their old regional opponents, Grace Christian, to start the day, and found little resistance from the Michigan team. Maranatha allowed just a dozen points in the first set before topping the Tigers 25-13 and 25-18 to close the match out.

Leading the attack was a hard-working Claire Hansel, who took 10 kills away from a total of 36 in the first match from MBU. Karley Johnson and Kelsey Johnson were right behind Hansel, posting nine and eight kills, respectively. McKenzie Janke led the way defensively with 13 digs in the three-set contest.

The second match of the day yielded a similar story to the first, as Maranatha upended Silver Lake while allowing just one point more in the entire match. Hansel pulled double duty, as she posted nine kills and 20 digs, leading MBU in both of those categories.

The wins moved Maranatha to a 13-9 record on the season, and they have now won five of their last six matches.

  • Hansel: 19 kills, 27 digs on the day
  • Janke: 22 digs
  • Karley: 14 kills, 28 assists
  • Kelsey: 14 kills, 39 assists
  • Series: The MBU-GCU series now stands at 22-0 in Maranatha's favor
  • Series: MBU now holds a 13-0 advantage in the SLC series
