Johnson, Sponable Shine On

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Kelsey Johnson and Alexis Sponable were a couple of September standouts, and the Association of Division III Independents has named them both as the Student-Athletes of the Month for Women's Soccer and Women's Volleyball.

Johnson was an indisputable threat to any and all opponents during the Sabercats' 11-win month last month, and the junior took home two AD3I weekly awards over the course of the month for good measure.

She contributed in a variety of ways, as she logged 171 kills, 331 assists, 221 digs, and 21 blocks during the month of September. Johnson ranks in the top 10 for virtually every statistical category in the AD3I, and she leads the association in assists while ranking third in kills, hitting percentage, and points. Johnson capped off a standout month with 15 kills, 22 assists, and 21 digs against MSOE on September 29, and she currently is tied for second in the NCAA DIII in triple-doubles (five).

Sponable, who recently broke into the Maranatha program record books (top 10 for career points), took home the accolade after notching six goals and one assist over the nine-game stretch. Like Johnson, Sponable also took home two weekly awards last month, as she netted the game-winners against Lakeland (September 4) and North Central (September 6).

The sophomore striker recorded her fourth career hat-trick in a 3-1 win at Blackburn on September 21, then distributed an assist in a 2-2 tie with Finlandia on September 25. Sponable ended the month with 19 total shots.
