Twin Bill Turmoil

THE LEAD

WATERTOWN, Wis. -- It was a non-conference doubleheader for Wisconsin Lutheran College, but the Warriors were ruthless.

WLC handed the Sabercats a pair of losses at Washington Park, scoring a combined 23 runs over the two games combined.

THE OVERVIEW

  • Results: MBU 3-17 WLC, MBU 0-6 WLC
  • Venue: Washington Park
  • Location: Watertown, Wis.
  • Records: MBU (2-18), WLC (13-19)

THE STORY

The Warriors wasted no time in the first game of the day.

WLC made the most of two hits and an error in the top of the first, posting three runs to take the lead right out of the gate. WLC added two more runs in the top of the third, and when Mike Hartmann kept the Sabercats to one hit through the first five innings, things were looking decidedly one way.

To put the game beyond all doubt, Wisconsin Lutheran added 12 more in the top of the sixth to take a 17-run lead. In the first game, WLC racked up 14 hits while the Sabercats were charged with four errors.

The only offense the Sabercats could generate off of Hartmann came in the sixth and seventh innings. Clint Matheis doubled to left-center field to bring home Ryan Hempel, then Jonah Bailey's single brought Matheis home two batters later. Matheis once again recorded an RBI in the seventh, but the game was already out of reach.

--

Game two was a pitchers' duel, as Kyle Cummins and Noah Cook went at it through the first three frames. Then the Warriors' bats caught fire in the top of the fourth inning, as the visitors smacked five hits to score four runs in the at-bat.

Stephen Baehman was handed the pitching responsibilities for the Warriors in the last two innings, and the freshman closed it out for WLC, keeping the Sabercats off the board and limiting MBU to just one hit through the final two frames.

Cummins pitched all seven innings in game two while leading the Sabercats with a 3-for-3 hitting performance.
