THE LEAD

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Today was a story of missed opportunities, as Maranatha lost twice to the in-rhythm Johnson University Royals in Knoxville.

The missed opportunities showed up when Maranatha only had 3 runs to show for 11 hits on the day. Caleb Huthmaker led the charge by going 3-3 with a double in game one and Ty Smith contributed 3 hits in the 2-game series. Today marked Johnson's 29th game of the season while Maranatha now has just 4 games under their belts.

THE STORY

Maranatha started by scoring two runs in the top of the first inning when David Hecker walked in a run and Sam Ratledge had an RBI single. But Johnson answered with an abrupt 10 runs in the bottom of the inning. Johnson eventually scored a run in each of the following innings to cement the 12-run win and end the game early. Caleb Huthmaker led Maranatha by going 3-3 with a double in the first game. 

Derrick Lay brought the good stuff on the mound for Johnson in game two, as he pitched all 7 innings and only allowed 4 hits and a run. Lay threw 78 pitches - 61 for strikes - and fanned 6 Sabercat batters in the win. Johnson had to space out their scoring, posting multiple runs in the first, fourth, and sixth innings to seal their second double-digit win of the series.
