Trouble with the Trojans

THE LEAD

DEERFIELD, Ill. -- Maranatha may have been swept at Trinity International today, but the Maranatha hitting was the best it's been so far this season.

The Sabercats carded 5 runs of 15 hits on the day. Ty Smith led Maranatha with 4 hits and an RBI. Sam Willis kickstarted a high-powered offense for TIU with 4 homers on the day.

THE OVERVIEW

  • Results: Maranatha 2-10 Trinity, Maranatha 3-13 Trinity
  • Venue: Trinity International University
  • Location: Deerfield, Ill.
  • Records: MBU (0-8), TIU (11-18)

THE STORY

A leadoff home run in the bottom of the first by Sam Willis set the tone for the first game of the day, but Maranatha answered with two runs in the top of the third. Kile Arp, David Cripps, and Ty Smith all had singles and Drew Smith connected with a double to center, and Maranatha had the lead over the Trojans.

But TIU answered with multi-run innings to close out a 10-2 win. Willis was the protagonist for TIU, launching three home runs while going 4-4. The major downside for Maranatha in the opener was finishing with only 2 runs off 9 hits. The Sabercats stranded 6 runners in the opening game of the doubleheader.
