KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Sabercats improved from game one to game two at Johnson Tennessee yesterday but still emerged with a couple of heavy losses to the hard-hitting royals.

The Sabercats will return to the Midwest with an 0-4 record from their spring trip and will look to reverse their momentum next Tuesday with a doubleheader at Trinity International.

OVERVIEW

  • Game One: Maranatha 5-18 Johnson
  • Game Two: Maranatha 7-16 Johnson
  • Venue: Russell Morgan Field, Johnson University
  • Location: Knoxville, Tenn.
  • Attendance
  • Records: MBU (0-4), JU (11-20)

STORY

It took a while for the Sabercats to get off the ground in the opening game, as they allowed 16 runs off 13 hits in the opening three innings. Daniel Piranian was the only Sabercat to get a hit off of Johnson's starter, Levi Keltz, in the first four frames, as Keltz eventually pitched all seven innings in the win.

A single to left from Nate Croswell sparked a three-run fifth that concluded with a two-RBI single from David Cripps, and the Sabercats plated two more in the sixth, but Johnson's closing statement was a couple of runs in the bottom of the sixth to close off the 18-5 win.

The second game started off right for Maranatha, as the Sabercats took advantage of a couple of mistakes from the Royals to score four runs* off just one hit. But the Royals quickly answered, posting big innings in the second and fifth to fuel a relentless offensive performance of 16 runs in the second game of the series.

Cripps and Piranian recorded hits in both games. Cripps led Maranatha with four runs scored on the day.
