WATERTOWN, Wis. -- Friday sees the Sabercats Baseball Team return to action, and after six weeks of practicing indoors, the call to get on a field and face live pitchers is unavoidable for Coach Gary Garrison and the Sabercats, as they can't wait to open the 2022 baseball season.

The team will be on the road for most of the season before wrapping up a 29-game schedule with four home doubleheaders in late April. After heartbreak and disappointment in the last three years, simply playing a normal schedule would be memorable itself, as the last few seasons have been either snowed on, diminished, or just canceled entirely.

The team has "[already seen] outstanding leadership from our captains and upperclassmen," said Coach Gary Garrison. "[They have a] willingness to improve individually and collectively."

The goal of the season for Garrison and the team revolves around "determination and skill development of individual players, growth together as a body of men - each challenging the other, and positive representation of Christ and MBU as we interact with other teams."

Garrison also noted that this year's freshmen have made an immediate impact on their preseason - a tedious six weeks indoors, hitting baseballs from a machine while waiting for the snow to melt and the fields to dry.

"I'm super excited personally to get back on the field following a year of health challenges which greatly hampered my involvement last year," Garrison said. "I haven't been directly involved in the day-to-day operation of the team since April 2019 [Garrison was sidelined last year with an injury], so I am eager to get back in the coach's box! I love coaching these guys and have missed it greatly the past two seasons."

Head Coach Gary Garrison is rejoined by assistant coaches Clint Matheis and Joel Borchardt, while David Cripps, Nate Croswell, and Sam Ratledge step into the captain roles for the 2022 season.
