THE LEAD

WATERTOWN, Wis. -- Cody Kuhl knocked a 2-run shot in a low-scoring doubleheader loss to North Central University.

Both games were pitchers' duels for the most part, as the 2 teams combined for just 11 runs on the day.

THE STORY

Jordan Garrison kept the Rams off the board early in the game, as the senior blanked NCU through the first 2 innings. In the top of the third, the Rams posted a couple of runs, as they made the most of 2 hits in the inning. North Central followed their third inning with 1 more run in the fourth, moving the score to 3-0.

MBU's answer came in the next half inning, as Cody Kuhl marked his home debut for Maranatha by going yard. The rookie saw his pitch and crushed it over the left-field fence to plate Caleb Huthmaker and make it a 1-run ballgame.

The comeback would stop there, however. Garrison and Micah Shepard kept the Rams off the board for the rest of the game, but the Sabercats could not generate another run. Huthmaker knocked a double down the left-field line, but that was the only runner that the Sabercats could move into scoring position for the rest of the game.

The second act was similar to the first, as the teams combined for just 1 more run. Shepard plated Ryan Hempel to give the Sabercats the lead in the bottom of the third inning, but that lead evaporated in the top of the fifth, when the Rams came alive to post 4 runs. The Rams utilized 4 hits and 2 Sabercat errors to push the 4 runs across.

As they did in the first game, NCU scored 1 more run in the following inning, and the Sabercats were once again frustrated for the remainder of the game. Nate Croswell made his third appearance on the mound this season, as he faced a no-decision.

THE STATS

Hempel led the Sabercats with 4 hits on the day. Hempel was the only one to post a hit in both games for the Sabercats

Huthmaker and Elijah May both recorded doubles on the day.

Timothy Kinzler posted his first multiple-hit game in Maranatha colors.

Kuhl's home run was the third of the season for the Sabercats.

This was the fewest runs this season that the Sabercats have allowed in a combined doubleheader.
