THE LEAD

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. -- The Sabercats saw a rebuilding year come to a close at the hands of the Dominican University Stars, whose defense held MBU to just one hit in a doubleheader at Boomers Stadium tonight.

Jordan Garrison produced the only MBU hit of the night. The four-year mainstay concludes his career in Maranatha colors along with fellow four-year players Elijah May and Micah Shepard.

THE STORY

Coming into tonight, the Stars were in the mood for a win after they had defeated the NACC powerhouse of Concordia Chicago on Sunday night. The CUC Cougars currently rank in the top spot in the Midwest in the NCAA Regional Rankings, and have been as high as #3 in the country for the NCAA DIII this season. Needless to say, the Stars' readiness level was at a high.

The first game was tight until the sixth inning. The Stars did post a run in the bottom of the first and another in the bottom of the fourth, but a three-run showing in the sixth inning sealed the deal for Dominican. The Stars managed 10 hits in game one and converted that to five runs in a 5-0 shutout win.

The Dominican pitching staff put in a collective effort, as Alex Garcia and Brandon Diedrich both pitched three innings while Austin Michals closed it out in the seventh.

Garrison got his hit off of Garcia in the top of the first inning, as he singled to right field. Once again, Maranatha struggled with errors, as they had five miscues in game one.

Dominican's defense made one half of the difference in game two, as the Stars scored 11 runs behind a combined no-hitter from the pitching staff. Quinten Hayes, Kanoa Ikeda-Flynn, and Dan Defino combined for this one, as the Stars kept the Sabercats off of the board in terms of runs and hits.

After notching a run in the first inning and four more through the third and fourth frames, the Stars logged six runs in the fifth to put the doubleheader on ice. Dominican's six-run explosion was highlighted by a two-run homer from Matt Segovia, who smashed his team-best third homer of the year to help seal a convincing win for Dominican University.

Coach Garrison and the Sabercats knew this would be a rebuilding year, as they entered this season having lost six key seniors from last year. Garrison, May, and Shepard will join the list of standout four-year contributors for the program, and their presence will be missed on this team as the Sabercats look ahead to 2019.

THE STATS

With the hit, Jordan Garrison concludes his career with 58 hits, tying his fellow senior Elijah May.

Segovia led the hosts with four RBI in the second game and six on the day.

Diedrich was credited with his second win of the season in game one. Ikeda-Flynn picked up his first win of the season and the second win of his career in game two.

DABBLING WITH DOMINICAN
