THE LEAD

ROCKFORD, Ill. -- In their first game in 8 days, the Sabercats' offer for their first win of the season was put on hold this afternoon, as they were swept by Rockford University.

Elijah May was the only Maranatha player to record an RBI on the day. He now has a season total of 7, which is tied for best on the team.

THE STORY

The Sabercats faced a double threat in the first game: one, the Rockford offense, who plated nine runs on MBU. And two, the arm of Zach Randecker. Randecker went the distance for the Regents in game one, allowing just three hits while piling up 11 strikeouts through seven innings. Not a bad showing for his first career win.

Ryan HempelMicah Shepard, and Dillon Smith all recorded hits in the first game for Maranatha, but the Sabercats could not pose any significant threat to Randecker's Regents. Rockford scored their nine runs off seven hits. Michael Tosado went 2-3 with two RBI in the opening game for RU.

-----

The Sabercats tried to get something going on offense in the second game. With two runners in scoring position, May knocked a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Shepard. After the top of the first inning, the Sabercats were sitting on a one-run lead.

The efforts were quickly negated, as the Regents posted a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame before adding two more in the third inning. The Regents then posted a 10-run showing over the fifth and sixth innings to secure the sweep of the doubleheader. Four Regent players recorded two hits in game two.

The Sabercats' only hits in game two came from Shepard and from Hempel, who had a leadoff double down the left-field line in the fifth inning.

Clint Matheis took the loss in game one while Jordan Garrison took the loss in game two for the Sabercats.

THE STATS

Hempel now has a hit in 10 of the Sabercats' 12 games this season and leads the team with 15 on the year.

Garrison fanned three batters in game two. The southpaw now has 75 career strikeouts.

Shepard's two hits bring his season total up to a dozen.

MBU managed five hits on the day while Rockford had 18.
