THE LEAD

WATERTOWN, Wis. -- On a bitter afternoon, the Sabercats saw their early dominance come to nothing in a 0-2 loss to Lawrence University.

MBU outshot Lawrence, 18-6, but the Vikings made the most of their chances to steal a win from the Sabercats.

THE STORY

The Sabercats dominated the game in the early goings. Brett Cournoyer and Daniel Kroll both had goalscoring opportunities early, but some alert goalkeeping from AJ Bryant kept the Sabercats off of the scoresheet.

The Vikings made the breakthrough in the 38th minute, when Nicholas Jatta did some fancy footwork at the top of the Sabercats' penalty area before sliding a low shot to the near post.

That goal was the Vikings' only shot in the first half. Through the first 45 minutes, MBU rattled off 13 attempts.

The second strike for Lawrence came almost 15 minutes into the second half, when Jawad Weleidat nestled a 16-yard finish into the lower-right corner to extend the lead. Weleidat was a marked man coming into the day, as he scored a hat-trick on the Sabercats in last year's meeting.

The Sabercats kept the pressure on through the second half but could not find their breakthrough.

THE NUMBERS

Stephen Roer finished the day with 2 shots on goal.

Cournoyer and Kroll both finished the day with 3 shots.

The Vikings put 5 of their 6 shots on frame.

With the win, Lawrence now holds a 2-1-1 advantage in the short-lived series.

THE CALENDAR

The Sabercats finish the regular season with a record of 8-9 and will travel to Emmaus Bible College next weekend for the NCCAA North Region Tournament. Catch the details at mbusabercats.com/composite.
