MEQUON, Wis. -- The Sabercats started their season today at the Ken Weidt Classic, hosted by Concordia University-Wisconsin, on a breezy Saturday morning on the shores of Lake Michigan. Cameron Rankin led the Sabercats' Men's Team with a 30:50.8 time in the Men's 8K, and the Sabercats placed 9th of 12 teams, besting Ripon College, Lakeland University, and Dominican University. In the Women's 6K, Sarah Vander Pluym led a 4-runner MBU squad with a 27:29 time and a 53rd-place finish.

Rankin showed promise for the upcoming year with a time of 30:50.8 - 17 seconds faster than his finish at the Ken Weidt Classic one year ago. Rankin led a squad of Sabercats that placed 5 runners in the top 60. Behind Rankin was Kile, whose time of 31:03 was a full 40 seconds quicker than his 31:43 at his first event last year, and just 30 seconds shy of his personal record.

Doak rounded out the top 3 for MBU and shaved almost a full minute off of his season-opening 32:52 time from 2016. Doak's mark from today is 61 seconds off of his personal record.

On the Women's Side, Vander Pluym boasted a time of 27:29 to lead the 4-runner group. The senior out of Whitewater, Wisconsin knocked 4 seconds off of her time from the 2016 Ken Weidt Classic, and she was backed up by Madelyn Hansel, who recorded a top-70 finish with a time of 28:10.1. Hansel's finish was a full 47 seconds faster than her time at the 2016 Ken Weidt Classic.

Lauryn Wigdal (33:59 - 116th) and Ruth Tan (42:32 - 133rd) rounded off an unofficial squad for MBU.

The Sabercats' next meet will be next Saturday at Faith Baptist Bible College in Ankeny, Iowa. Catch details of the event at mbusabercats.com/composite.
