A Winning Start: Sabercats Top Knights in New Ulm

NEW ULM, Minn. - After losing to the Knights 35-0 in New Ulm during the 2015 season, the Sabercats showed steely resolve and improvement in the 2016 edition on the clash, besting the Knights by a score of 20-7 after shutting the Knights out in the first half. Jonah Bueltel connected twice with Clayton Morrisonwhile Ben Schulz led a stalwart defense.

Score Summary

  • 1st Quarter
    • Just over three minutes in, the freshman running back Frankie Martinezweaved through the Knights' defense for a 16-yard rush. The Sabercats had drawn first blood (7-0)
  • 2nd Quarter
    • With only 60 seconds left on the clock, Bueltel capped off the drive by connecting a five-yard pass with Morrison, who received for his first touchdown on the day. David Fenton put his second kick through the uprights, and the Sabercats had a 14-point advantage (14-0)
    • The Sabercat defense remained relentless, and did not allow anything through in the first half. Going into the locker room, the 14-point lead remained intact
  • 3rd Quarter
    • Not stopping there, the Bueltel-Morrison combo struck again, this time with a 16 yard aerial approach coming no longer than two minutes into the quarter (20-0)
    • The Knights gained seven back just over six minutes later. The hosts scored through the air via a 15-yarder (20-7)
  • 4th Quarter
    • The Sabercats' defense was rigid, as Schulz (13 tackles) and Jedidiah Marsh (11 tackles) spearheaded the resistance to the Knights' offense. In the backfield, Devon Steuerwald broke up four passes to help keep the Knights at bay. As the clock wound down, the Sabercats' resolve lasted, and the team had begun the season with a win
