Cougars' Variety Sinks Sabercats

WATERTOWN, Wis. - On a cool Parents' Day afternoon in Watertown, the Sabercats fell to the strong offense of the Cougars of Concordia-Chicago, who posted three touchdowns through the air and three on the ground. Throughout, the Sabercats made some attention-grabbing defensive plays, but they could not generate the offense needed to pull out the win.

The Basics

  • Result: Sabercats 10-42 Cougars
  • Venue: Maranatha Baptist University
  • Records: Sabercats: now 1-3, Cougars: now 2-1
  • Attendance: 350

How it Happened

  • 1st Quarter
    • On the Sabercats' first drive of the game, Savon Williams took advantage of some key blocks to run 58 yards down the right sideline and register his second touchdown of the year. It was an electric start for the Sabercats (7-0)
    • Concordia-Chicago would answer quickly, however, and put seven points of their own on the board on their first drive. Virnala - the Cougar QB - found a wide open Lofton in the endzone as the Cougars put up an easy answer (7-7)
    • Enter Lance Moise, who tormented the Sabercats for 216 total yards on the day. Moise's first act was a 59-yard run up the middle to put CUC on top (7-14)
  • 2nd Quarter
    • Moise returned to the scoresheet in the second quarter, as his 11-yard run split the Sabercat defense (7-21)
    • With just seconds on the clock, Moise chalked up his third touchdown of the day, as an 11-yard pass from Virnala gave the Cougars breathing room heading into the break (7-28)
  • 3rd Quarter
    • The story remained unchanged: the Sabercats could not solve the Cougar defense, and Moise remained the primary antagonist in the clash. Just three minutes into the second half, Moise weaved through the heart of the Sabercat defense to register his fourth TD of the day (7-35)
    • Inside the final three minutes of the third quarter, the Cougars posted their final score of the day. Brandon Kowalkowski hauled in a 16-yard pass from Rob Branquist for the Cougars' sixth touchdown of the contest (7-42)
  • 4th Quarter
    • David Fenton provided the only points of the final act, as the South Bend native's 39-yard field goal put the Sabercats into double digits and end the game on a high note (10-42)

Side Notes

  • Ben Schulz led the defensive efforts for the Sabercats - Schulz tallied 16 tackles (his season's best) and 2 forced fumbles
