Sabercats' Rally Not Enough in Ellendale

ELLENDALE, N.D. – In an all-NCCAA clash, the Lions of Trinity Bible successfully avenged their 2015 loss to the Sabercats by showcasing a strong running game in a 33-14 win in North Dakota. After going into the locker room behind 0-12, the Sabercats' rally was not enough to overcome the Lions' solid first half.

The Basics

  • Result: Sabercats 14-33 Lions
  • Location: Trinity Bible College – Bob Tatum Field
  • Attendance: 123
  • Sabercats: now 1-2; Lions: now 2-2

How it Happened

  • 1st Quarter
    • The Lions were on the board first after Michale Cade snuck into to the endzone with a two-yard run (0-6)
  • 2nd Quarter
    • Just before the halftime break, the Lions extended their lead to an even dozen when Jeremy Hill completed a short run into the Sabercats' endzone with just over four minutes on the clock (0-14)
  • 3rd Quarter
    • The Lions put themselves even farther ahead in the third quarter. Robert O'Neil weaved through and around the Sabercats' defense for an 11-yard run (0-18)
    • Just three minutes later, Clint Saxon's 21-yard TD reception from Jonah Bueltel was the only play of the Sabercats' scoring drive, as they quickly got right back into the game (7-18)
  • 4th Quarter
    • Frankie Martinez's 13-yard rush made the game a nail-biter, as the Sabercats had reduced the Lions' lead from 18 to four within a nine-minute span and with 12 minutes still left on the clock (14-18)
    • The Lions negated the Sabercats' resolve soon after, however. Jeremy Hill broke away for a 34-yard run with 7:31 to play, and the Lions' defense frustrated the Sabercats' efforts for the remainder of the game with a well-timed interception and a sack. After Hill returned for an encore touchdown, the Lions had effectively doubled the Sabercats' score to take the win (14-33)
