LEAD

DEFIANCE, Ohio -- The Sabercats continued a difficult early-season schedule today, picking up a 46-80 loss against Miami-Hamilton to end a winless weekend at Defiance College's Purple & Gold Tournament.

Jed Mayhak led the team with 14 points and eight rebounds, but the Sabercats continue to struggle with possession, committing 33 turnovers in the loss.

STORY

Those turnovers once again proved to be a major part of the story, as the Harriers racked up 40 points on the night off the Sabercats' miscues. Maranatha started with a seven-point lead and didn't let UMH score until five minutes into the game, but after that initial run, the Sabercats went cold. In fact, neither team scored a single point in a four-minute stretch in the first half, and the Harriers racked up 37 points while holding the Sabercats to just seven until two minutes remained in the opening half.

A parting three-pointer from Caleb Moultrie pushed the Sabercats over the 20-point mark for the half, but their turnovers were costing them bigtime. The Harriers put up 41 points and had a vicelike grip on the game going into the locker rooms.

The story barely changed in the second half - the Sabercats narrowed the scoring gap by just four points, shooting just 25 percent from the floor. Mayhak increased his points total to 14 in the second half, Moultrie scored nine and Josh Davis scored seven, but everyone in the UMH starting five knocked down double digits to secure the win for the undefeated Harriers.
