WATERTOWN, Wis. -- The Maranatha Men's Basketball Team returns to the floor tomorrow night with the hopes of a "normal" game schedule, a shot at a regional title, and a chance to set some wrongs right after disappointment in the last two seasons.

The team's last contest was a heartbreaking 94-90 loss to Central Christian College of the Bible at last year's NCCAA North Region Tournament. The end of that game triggered the beginning of the preparations for the 2021-22 season, and it's now in the hands of the student-athletes and coaches to give substance to their resolve.

They're in it together.

"I've seen a lot of improvement from the beginning of the year already," said Head Coach Joel Borchardt. "There's been a sense of 'we've got to earn it' this year - we've seen a change in mentality and make sure we bring it every day. That starts with the leadership on the team, and the captains on the team have pushed that. The captains said that they want to see unity on the team - it's about the team first, and not about individuals.

Unity is going to be a big thing for us this year - we graduated an All-American [Stephen Wilkerson] and so we can't rely on Steve and Taylor [Ball] like we did last year. We have to work as a unit. We're going to have to change our offense and defense this year to factor in our strengths, and the guys are coming in every single day to work to be as good as they can be. But the guys care more about the guy next to them than they do about themselves, and that's going to be the biggest thing for us."

  • Seven student-athletes suit up in Maranatha colors for the first time
