LEAD

WATERTOWN, Wis. -- The Sabercats fall to Dominican in a hard-fought matchup by a score of 77-60.

Caleb Moultrie dropped 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while Aaron Sanders led a late offensive surge to finish with 14 points.

OVERVIEW

  • Result: Maranatha 60-77 Dominican
  • Venue: Maranatha Baptist University
  • Location: Watertown, Wis.
  • Attendance: -
  • Records: MBU (0-6), DU (1-3)

STORY

The first half of the game remained tight throughout, neither team taking a massive lead over the other. The Stars lead for most of the half, but their lead never extended past nine points. The Sabercat defense held strong and forced several turnovers and made some key defensive rebounds to keep the score close. Malachi Herbster (nine points) and Caleb Moultrie (8 points) led the offense while Josh Davis helped the pair lead the team to rack up defensive rebounds. By the end of the half, Maranatha kept the score close at 36-30.

Dominican came out firing in the second half, however, quickly extending their lead to 15. From there, the Stars' lead would remain in double digits. The Sabercats made a couple of runs late in the half, but the Dominican offense remained strong and continued to pressure the good guys until the end. Aaron Sanders stepped up to lead the offense in the half with 10 points, while Moultrie added five rebounds to his total for the night. Despite the late effort, Dominican held the Sabercats to a 77-60 final.

"It would've been nice to play better and have a win tonight," said Coach Joel Borchardt. "But we saw more improvement from tonight - we're limiting turnovers, our point guards are seeing the floor better, but once again we couldn't focus for the full 40 minutes and play hard for the full 40. I think that was the difference - [Dominican] came to play hard for the full 40 and I think it could've been a really good game - we just let some things go that we needed to take care of. We'll come back tomorrow and refocus and re-energize and just keep looking to get better every day."
