LEAD

MILWAUKEE -- The Sabercats couldn't recover from a slow start tonight, as they continued a rigorous early-season schedule with a 46-90 loss at Cardinal Stritch.

Caleb Moultrie dropped a career-high 21 points on the night and the team welcomed Ethan Cooper and Ben Price to the roster, but those seemed to be the biggest bright spots for Maranatha, who are still looking for their first win of the season

OVERVIEW

  • Venue: Cardinal Stritch University Fieldhouse

STORY

To say it was a slow start for Maranatha was an understatement, as Stritch out-shot and out-rebounded Maranatha through the opening minutes. The Sabercats just couldn't connect their shots, and when Coach Joel Borchardt called a full timeout with 12:30 on the clock, Stritch already had a 17-2 lead. Stritch looked for the paint in the first half, compiling 26 points from up close.

By halftime, Stritch shot themselves to a 45-20 lead, going 50 percent from the field while the Sabercats were just 7-27 from the floor - just over 25 percent.

The Sabercats needed something special in the second half, but they just couldn't reduce the margin between them and their hosts, and the story remained fundamentally unchanged. Maranatha quieted down Stritch's post play, but the Wolves made up for it in other ways, as they shot over 50 percent from downtown on the night. Stritch out-rebounded Maranatha 52-31 and shot over 50 percent from the floor on the night.

Stritch sent four players into double figures. Nicolas Lagerman led all the scoring with 17 points from off the bench for the Wolves.

"We're a little disappointed with the outcome tonight," said Coach Joel Borchardt. "We were excited to come and compete again with a good team but disappointed that we didn't score in the first six or seven minutes. Coach [Anthony] Houston has his team very well prepared and they made it really tough for us to score. We just didn't show what we were capable of, and we're looking to get back to practice tomorrow and just improve each day so we can compete each game. We know our season ends in February or March, and we're looking to be at our best come the end of the season.
