LEAD

WATERTOWN, Wis. -- With a 0-1 loss in the opening Regional Tournament matchup, the Sabercats need some help if they want to win the North Region.

The Sabercats will conclude tournament play with a 2:00 p.m. matchup with Moody Bible on Saturday - while the tournament hangs in the balance we do know that the Sabercats must twin on Saturday if they want to stay alive.

OVERVIEW

  • Result: Maranatha 0-1 Faith
  • Venue: Maranatha Baptist University
  • Location: Watertown, Wis.
  • Event: NCCAA North Region Tournament
  • Attendance: 55
  • Record: MBU (3-8-2), FBBC (3-8-1)

STORY

It was a story that the Sabercats have written before - despite heavily out-shooting the opponent, Maranatha just couldn't land one of their shots in the back of the net. Faith's goal came off of a counter-attack early on in the second half, and there was just no way back for the Sabercats.

Joshua Wright created some chances for the Sabercats early in the first half. The sophomore sent a couple of inviting crosses into the Faith penalty area, but the Sabercats couldn't put anyone on the end of it. The second half yielded no way through for Maranatha either. Jackson Elms came closest with a hard-hit shot to the corner, and Kyle Cummins almost bent a shot into the corner, but the Faith goalkeeper was up to the task, making the save on both occasions.

Maranatha needs some help from Moody now in order to advance to Florida and the NCCAA DII National Tournament. The scenarios for that are described below.

MBU Starters: 1- Kinzler (C), 3- K. Elms, 4- Roer (C), 5- J. Elms, 9- Wright, 11- Cummins, 12- Steuerwald (C), 14- MacDonald, 21- Hansel, 22- Hugg, 23- Perkins

  • Shot count: Maranatha 28-7 Faith
  • Ramon Hernandez: 7 saves for Faith
  • Cummins: three shots on target
  • Braeden Hansel: three shots on target
  • Last time: The two teams tied 1-1 in overtime at Maranatha
  • Series: Maranatha now leads the series 8-2-1

OPPONENTS

  • Faith competes with Maranatha for the NCCAA North Region
  • Faith also competes in the Midwest Christian College Conference

SCENARIOS

All three teams can still win the tournament. Here are the three possibilities based on tomorrow's result:

If Faith wins tomorrow, they win the region outright.

If Faith and Moody tie tomorrow, only Faith and Moody can win the region. Moody would then have to beat Maranatha on Saturday, and it would come down to the tiebreakers (goal difference, goals against, and goals for).

If Moody wins tomorrow, only then is Maranatha still alive. Maranatha would then have to beat Moody on Saturday, and it would come down to the tiebreakers.

NEXT

The Sabercats will face Moody Bible Institute on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in what could be a winner-takes-all regional championship. Find gameday details at mbusabercats.com/schedule.
