WATERTOWN, Wis. -- Thanks to Landon Broere's first career goals and one each from Mike Davis and Michael Doese, the Sabercats came back to beat Andrews University 4-2 for their first win of the season.

Maranatha scored three second-half goals to get into the win column for the first time in the 2023 season.

OVERVIEW

  • Result: Maranatha 4-2 Andrews
  • Venue: Maranatha Baptist University
  • Location: Watertown, Wis.
  • Attendance: 94
  • Record: MBU (1-6-0), AU (1-3-0)

STORY

Maranatha struck first halfway through the first half, when Doese collected a ball at the edge of the Cardinals' penalty area and nudged a pass towards Broere at the top of the box. Broere took his chance with conviction, slotting his shot into the bottom-left corner to score his first collegiate goal and give the Sabercats the 1-0 lead.

Andrews equalized with a free kick, then took the lead off a Maranatha own goal before halftime. Just like that, the momentum had swung back in the Cardinals' favor and they had the 2-1 halftime lead.

The Sabercats were still in it, and they quickly equalized just a couple of minutes into the second half. Davis drew a foul in the Cardinals' penalty area and then calmly buried his penalty kick to tie the game.

Doese produced the game-winner in the 57th minute, and he did it in style. Grant Kirchner punched in a cross from the left side past the head of Davis, and the ball came to Doese on the far side of the penalty area. Doed touched it to his left around an Andrews defender before firing it high into the far upper corner for a spectacular go-ahead goal. Doese had his goal, and the Sabercats had their lead.

Broere added his second of the game just three minutes later. Davis sent in a dangerous corner kick towards the back post from the left side, and Broere budged it in at the back post for a close-range cap to the goalscoring on the afternoon. Broere's man-of-the-match goalscoring performance gave the Sabercats their first win of the season and the win in the first-ever Maranatha-Andrews matchup.
