2017 Baseball Season Preview

WATERTOWN, Wis. --- The Sabercats and Coach Gary Garrison enter the 2017 season with the aim of reaching a goal which so closely evaded them the last two seasons: breaking the program wins record by winning 10 games in the season.

With a promising core of returning players and talented newcomers, Garrison and the Sabercats look to 2017 with rejuvenated optimism.

"This group has been a very special group to coach," said Garrison. "I have appreciated their leadership and commitment so much. We are excited about the leadership of our seniors. We also have depth on the mound and with our experienced position players."

That group of seniors includes Caleb and Adam Courtney, Caleb Prigge, Jacob Vossen, and Wes Wagner. Wagner holds two seasons' experience while the remaining four seniors will all play their fourth seasons in MBU colors. "It is going to be very tough to say goodbye to the seniors at the conclusion of this season," said Garrison. "They will be greatly missed."

The Courtney brothers and Prigge represent the better part of the Sabercats' infield, and the trio will look to lead the team on the field along with Wagner, while the tandem of Jordan Garrison on the mound and Elijah May behind the plate round off an exciting core of returning players.

The Sabercats have just five home game dates in April, which are highlighted by a four-game home series with Finlandia on April 28-29. Besides those home games, Garrison sees the away game stretch of April 6-11 as key to the season. During that stretch, the Sabercats play away to Lakeland (NACC), Illinois Tech (AD3I), and MSOE (NACC).

Garrison outlined the team's goals for the 2017 season: "our goals are to represent Christ in a positive way to all we come in contact with; Act Like Men (that’s our theme this year); and beat the school record for season wins.  Of course, there are more but those are some key ones."

Their campaign for the record will begin Thursday with a four-game series held at Lincoln Christian University in Lincoln, Ill.
