Grinding it Out

ROCKFORD, Ill. -- An impressive Rockford University Regents squad took a 4-0 win over MBU today at the Mercyhealth Sportscore Complex.

Rockford netted two goals in each half, as they continued an impressive run of play with another win this afternoon.

  • Result: Maranatha 0-4 Rockford
  • Venue: Mercyhealth Sportscore Two
  • Location: Rockford, Ill.
  • Attendance: 61
  • Records: MBU (1-9-0), RU (7-5-1)

The Sabercats came into the game not knowing exactly what to expect, as Rockford has posted mixed results so far this year. The hosts impressed early, netting in the 17th minute when Saeed Alqahtani set up Carlos Montes on a breakaway. Less than 10 minutes later, Montes added his second of the game with a well-placed strike from 30 yards that found the upper 90. It was Montes' third goal in the last two games, as he scored the game-winner over Aurora (NACC) last night.

The Sabercats' only chance in the first half came when Nathan Campbell tested the Rockford keeper with a well-struck shot from over 30 yards out, but Anthony Beck was up to the challenge and made the save. The halftime score stood at 2-0 in favor of the Regents.

Just over 10 minutes into the second half, the Regents increased the lead to three, as Adam Pedro was on hand to slot a 12-yard shot into the bottom corner. The fourth and final goal came with just over eight minutes left when Ryan Munch knocked a shot that caromed off the underside of the crossbar and bounced over the line.

The Sabercats increased their quality of play as the game went on, but that quick start from the Regents turned out to be a primary difference-maker in the end.

  • Montes: 2 goals, 1 assist
  • Alqahtari: 2 assists
  • Andrew TaylorTim Kinzler: 5 and 3 saves, respectively
  • Series: The all-time series now stands at 4-4-1

  • Rockford competes in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference and is 2-3-0 in conference play.
  • The Regents took home an upset win, 2-1, at Aurora last night.
  • Rockford has shared some opponents with MBU, as they have posted wins over Ripon, Beloit, and Moody this season.
