Regents Double Up Sabercats Under the Lights

ROSCOE, Ill. --- The Sabercats were competitive in two losses tonight, as they pushed nine runs across the plate in a doubleheader against the Rockford University Regents at Swanson Park. RU took home 6-9 and 3-12 wins, as the second game was shortened by the run rule.

With the losses, the Sabercats fall to 6-16 on the season while the Regents improve to 6-24.

MBU got on the board in their first at-bat, as consecutive singles from Katelyn Hockema and Hannah May brought up Harmony Bailey, who did just enough to bring home Hockema and give MBU the one-run lead. (1-0)

The Regents answered quickly and emphatically, as the hosts utilized solid base hits to score five runs in their next two innings. A defensive battle commenced for the following two and a half innings, then the Regents registered an RBI single off the bat of Shannon LeGath, which increased the lead to five. (1-6)

The Sabercats then posted their biggest at-bat of the night, as an RBI double to left center from Hannah May brought in Katelyn Hockema and Tina Kolinski to get things started. May's tenure as a runner was short-lived, as a single from Harmony Bailey in the next at-bat plated her fellow Yooper to make it a two-run game. A few batters later, Katie Bender went the other way with an RBI single down the right field line to bring home Brooke Campbell and put the Sabercats within one run of the Regents. (5-6)

Rockford was unfazed. In the bottom-half of the inning, their bats were explosive, as a home run from Brooke Burris was followed by a two-RBI single from Nicole McCabe, which gave Rockford room to breathe for the time being. (5-9)

The Sabercats tried to mount a comeback in their final chance. Kolinski characteristically led off with a base hit and stole second; then was brought home with an RBI single up the middle from Bailey to make it a three-run game, but with two outs on the board. The hosts did just enough from that point on to retire the side and secure a hard-earned first win. (6-9)

The top of the order did their part for the Sabercats in game one, as Kolinski, Hockema, May, and Bailey each notched two hits. Kolinski and Hockema scored two runs each while May (2) and Bailey (3) each registered multiple RBIs.

In game two, MBU's scoring was capped after a promising first inning. Singles from May and Maisy Alldredge, combined with alert baserunning from MBU, put the Sabercats up 3-0 after their first at bat.

The Regents were not to be denied, however, as they posted multiple runs in the second through fourth innings to take a run-rule win off the Sabercats. The hosts' scoring was capped off by a three-run shot to left by Stefany Kenworthy, which represented the final three runs in the Regents' impressive offensive display. (3-12)

The Sabercats will return to action on Thursday evening when they host Mount Mary University at 5:00 p.m. in an all-AD3I contest
