LEAD

WATERTOWN, Wis. -- The good news is that the Sabercats went on a scoring spree; the bad news is that their streak has been snapped.

Despite Callie Morrison's career-high 37 points, the Sabercats had their eight-game winning streak snapped 88-82 at the hands of North Central University.

OVERVIEW

  • Result: Maranatha 82-88 North Central
  • Venue: Maranatha Baptist University
  • Location: Watertown, Wis.
  • Attendance: 126
  • Records: MBU (9-2), North Central (9-8)

STORY

A 27-point first quarter signaled the start of a high-scoring game for MBU, who looked in total control after limiting the Rams to just 13 points. Callie connected five of seven shots to put up 10 points and Kelsey Johnson contributed nine of her own, and MBU shot over 60 percent from the field, collectively. Great start.

North Central answered with a 26-21 advantage in the second quarter of the game, but Maranatha still looked to be the more dominant team heading into the break, as they still had a 48-39 lead and a history of solid third quarters.

But history doesn't always repeat itself.

Maranatha went stone cold in the third quarter and never recovered. Johnson was the only one to connect anything, as MBU shot a measly 17.6 percent from the field while North Central couldn't miss. The Rams hit 10 of 13 shots, putting up 28 points to take a commanding lead going into the fourth quarter. The game had been turned on its head.

The Sabercats never recovered even though they ended with 27 points in the final frame. Morrison upped her count to 37, which ties her for 10th in the Maranatha program record books for single-game points. Johnson finished with 26, but amazingly, the efforts weren't enough.
