Dutch Dominate Sabercats at Home

Pella, Iowa -- In their second game in as many days, the Sabercats fell to an impressive Central College Dutch (IIAC) side by a score of 0-4. With the loss, the Sabercats are now 1-1 to start the 2017 season.

The Basics

  • Result: Sabercats 0-4 Dutch
  • Venue: Kuyper Athletic Complex
  • Attendance: 150
  • Sabercats: now 1-1

The Dutch wasted no time getting on the board, as Erin Manion finished a Central attack in the fifth minute by burying a rebound. The goal would be Manion's first of 2 on the day.

Manion's second strike came 20 minutes into the game, and the goal was a crowd-pleaser. Felicia Roppe came off the bench and was credited with the assist with what seemed to be her first touch of the game. It was nothing short of spectacular, as Roppe executed a bicycle kick which found the head of Manion, who steered the ball into the Sabercats' net. Manion would finish the day with 10 shots, 2 of which were on goal.

Entering halftime, the Sabercats were in the hole 0-2.

Maranatha's defense withstood the test of time in the second half, as they neutralized the Dutch attack for the better part of the interval.

Elise Askelsen finally provided the breakthrough for the hosts at the 71:15 mark. After Olivia Stoops' pass from the right wing found Askelsen inside the box, Askelsen made no mistake with her opportunity as she made her close-range chance count. With roughly 20 minutes left, it was 3-0 for the hosts.

The fourth and final goal came just 3 minutes later when Caitlyn Champ sealed the game for Central College. Champ's finish was set up by Mikaela Erickson.

Hannah Anderson was credited with the loss and made 14 saves in the outing.

"We knew we were coming up against a great opponent today in Central College," stated Coach David Anderson. "So their quality on the ball and the team's mobility gave us a great challenge. I'm proud of the way the girls fought hard to stay organized today. I'm also thankful for the opportunity we have to test ourselves in these types of environments. These back-to-back games will help our preparation for postseason play immensely."

The next test for the Sabercats will be in one week, as they head to Plymouth, Wisconsin to take on Lakeland University (NACC) on Friday, September 8 at 4 p.m.
