THE LEAD
GRAYSON, Ky. -- After earning a draw yesterday, the Sabercats showed determination to pull out a 2-0 win over Kentucky Christian University.
Two goals from Alexis Sponable were the difference-makers, and Hannah Anderson preserved the shutout with 6 saves on the day as the Sabercats went 1-0-1 on the weekend.
THE STORY
Sponable wasted little time getting on the scoresheet. A well-placed Alison Hernandez volley-pass sent Sponable to the left corner of the KCU goal area, where she cut back on her right foot to evade a sliding defender. Sponable had the presence of mind from close range to fire a low shot to the near post, which left the KCU goalkeeper helpless.
Sponable completed her 3-goal weekend just 20 minutes later. Shari Moore sent a low pass from midfield behind the KCU back line, where Sponable ran onto it about 25 yards away from the goal. Sponable came away on the better side of a 50/50 challenge with a recovering defender and found herself one-on-one with the goalkeeper. The freshman made no mistake from there, as she found the opening in the lower-right-hand corner from just inside the box to extend the Sabercats' advantage.
THE NUMBERS
Anderson made 4 saves in the first half and 2 in the second. This was the third shutout this season for the All-American goalkeeper.
Sponable's season tally now stands at a noteworthy 12 goals in 11 games.
Sponable fired 6 shots, all on target. Hernandez added 2 shots as well and put one of them on frame.
THE SOUND BITE
"I'm excited for the girls to get this result today," said Coach David Anderson. "Anytime we play back-to-back games, the second one is always going to be a test. I think we passed the test today. Hannah Wells and Kim Grogan both had great games at center back. Sarah Bagin grew up a lot today as well in central midfield. I think the key to our success today was the ability of our players to play to their strengths."
