MILWAUKEE -- After suffering a 0-2 defeat to Lakeland University yesterday, the Sabercats returned to their winning ways this afternoon as they bested the Alverno College Inferno by a score of 3-0. Alison Hernandez netted her first goal of the season, Alexis Sponable added her fourth goal of the 2017 campaign, and Sarah Bagin scored her first goal for the Blue and Gold.
Hernandez's flair and creativity opened the goalscoring for the Sabercats at the 9-minute mark. On the left side of the field deep in Alverno's half, Sponable's throw-in found the feet of Hernandez, who jinked her way into the Inferno penalty area, leaving 3 Alverno defenders in her wake. In a 1-on-1 situation with the goalkeeper, Hernandez calmly passed the ball into the goal at the near post and it was 1-0 Sabercats.
Later on in the first half, Hernandez played the role of provider, as she placed a through ball to Sponable behind the Inferno back line. Sponable's determined running allowed her to get to the ball first, and she held off her pursuing defender while slotting the ball into the bottom-left corner. 2-0 Sabercats.
The score remained 2-0 in MBU's favor entering halftime.
The second half was a standoff until the 72-minute mark, which was when Sarah Bagin opened her goalscoring account for MBU. After Heidi Pape's free kick was knocked around in the box, the ball came loose in Bagin's vicinity, and with her first touch the rookie fired an emphatic right-footed shot from outside the box through everyone and into the far corner of the Alverno net. Three goals to the good.
From then on, Maranatha kept the pressure on the Inferno, and did not allow the hosts to give Hannah Anderson any real test. When the 90 minutes was complete, the Sabercats had another commanding away win to their name.
Anderson recorded 3 saves and was credited with the shutout win. MBU rattled off 20 shots to the Inferno's 9.
"[I am] really excited with how we started today," said Coach David Anderson after the game. "Much improved from our sluggish start yesterday. The biggest challenge for us today was always going to be our mental approach after letting yesterday's result slip away. I'm really proud of how the girls came out firing today. Congrats to Sarah Bagin on her first collegiate goal. Also, I'm stoked for Leah Ng, who had a massive contribution off the bench. This was a good team win for us!"
