Sabercats Fall Short to Second-Half Muskie Surge

PLYMOUTH, Wis. -- Pitted up against the Muskies of Lakeland University, the Sabercats could not find an answer to the Muskies' defense despite rattling off 8 shots on the day. Two second-half goals from the Muskies made the difference as the hosts took all the spoils from the 90 minutes.

The Basics

  • Result: Sabercats 0-2
  • Venue: Taylor Field
  • Attendance: 56
  • Sabercats: now 1-2, Muskies: now 2-2

The first half saw the two teams trade chances, as the Muskies tested Hannah Anderson twice in the opening 10 minutes. Anderson was up to the test and made a couple of routine saves to keep the Muskies off the scoresheet. On the other end of the field, Alyssa Wright and Alexis Sponable had both their efforts turned away by the Muskies' goalkeeper, Grace Daehling.

Late in the half, Rachel Prigge fired a shot on goal, but once again Daehling was up to the task. At halftime, the score remained 0-0.

Coming out of the break, the Muskies looked to be the more dangerous team, keeping Anderson on her toes on two different occasions. The hosts' pressure soon paid off, as they drew a penalty kick in the 57th minute. Up stepped Hope Cerney, who made no mistake from the spot as she netted her first goal of the season.

Roughly 15 minutes later, Lakeland scored their second goal of the game when Zyta Mueller fired a 28-yard shot that flew beyond Anderson's reach. With just under 20 minutes on the clock, the hosts had an insurance policy on their lead.

Sponable tried to produce a consolation goal inside of the final 15 minutes, but both of her efforts missed wide left, and the Muskies held on for the win.

Anderson registered 4 saves in the outing, and Sponable took 3 shots on the day.

"Certainly not the outcome we were looking for today," said Coach David Anderson after the match. "We felt we had a real chance to get the victory today. Congratulations to Lakeland for pulling out the result. We lacked decisive running in the final third today. Fortunately, we have a chance to get this taste out of our mouth right away as we look to rebound at Alverno tomorrow."

The Sabercats return to action tomorrow when they travel to Milwaukee to take on the Alverno College Inferno. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m., and the details are available at mbusabercats.com/composite.
