WATERTOWN, Wis. -- Thanks to goals from Mallory WilletteChelsea Graham, and Amelia Schroeder, the Sabercats finally have their first win of the season, beating Mount Mary 3-2 on a picture-perfect Tuesday afternoon.

The Sabercats were ahead 2-1 at halftime before sealing out the win in the second half, outlasting a Mount Mary onslaught of attack en route to the hard-earned win.

OVERVIEW

  • Result: Maranatha 3-2 Mount Mary
  • Venue: Maranatha Baptist University
  • Location: Watertown, Wis.
  • Attendance: 25
  • Record: MBU (1-6-0), MMU (2-4-0)

STORY

After Mount Mary opened the scoring with a free kick early in the game, Willette answered 30 minutes in for the Sabercats. Willette played a corner kick into the box to Schroeder, who placed the ball back out into crossing range for Willette. Willette sent a one-time shot to the back post that looped in over the goalkeeper and nestled into the bottom corner to tie things up.

Just before halftime, Megan Prigge made it two assists in two games, as she sent in a dangerous corner kick toward the head of Graham, who nodded it in from about 10 yards to make it a 2-1 game. That lead would hold through halftime, and Maranatha made it a two-goal cushion shortly into the second half when Jocelyn Metcalf connected with Schroeder, sending the freshman into the box for a close-range finish. Schroeder slotted the ball underneath the oncoming goalkeeper for her fifth goal of the season and a 3-1 game. Metcalf charted her first career assist on the play.

Mount Mary piled on the pressure late in the game, and the Sabercats had to weather the storm from the Blue Angels. Mount Mary pulled one goal back with a penalty kick in the 71st minute, but none of the other nine second-half shots would find the target for Mount Mary.

When the final whistle sounded, the Sabercats had wrapped up their first win of the season and will look to make it two in a row in their next test - Friday at home against Spurgeon.
