ROCKFORD, Ill. -- The Sabercats were close to flawless as they swept through the Rockford Triangular today.
At Rockford University's Seaver Center, MBU topped RU in 3 sets before going on to beat AD3I opponents Illinois Tech in 4. The wins mark the fourth and fifth in a row for MBU, making this week a perfect 4-0 week for the Blue and Gold.
Alexis Bueltel was especially dangerous for the Sabercats, as she amassed 23 kills, 8 aces, and 4 blocks on the day. Bueltel was backed up by Claire Hansel, who continued an impressive rookie year with 16 kills and 13 digs over the 2 matches combined.
The Sabercats breezed through their opening match, as they dispatched the hosting Regents in 3 quick sets. The Sabercats' defense held the Regents to just 21 points over the first 2 sets, and Katie Bender led the defensive effort with 17 digs. Bueltel picked up 11 kills without a single hitting error, and Kelsey Johnson was credited with 11 assists and 11 digs throughout the match. The Sabercats had just 8 hitting errors and a .273 attacking percentage, making for a precise opening win.
In their second match of the day, the Sabercats were tested by the IIT Scarlet Hawks in a 97-minute battle. IIT's Sara Hassell deserved a mention, as she tallied 23 kills and 20 digs in the 4-set excursion.
However, the efforts of Hassell and IIT were negated by a solid team effort from the Sabercats. After beating IIT in the opening 2 sets, the Sabercats let the third set drop, but only to win the fourth set by a comfortable 7 points. Bueltel and Hansel combined for 21 kills while an active Katie Bender kept the floor clean with 32 digs.
Over the last 5 seasons, the Sabercats have topped both RU and IIT 4 times.
The next contest for MBU will be Friday night at Mount Mary at 7 p.m. Catch the details at mbusabercats.com/composite.
