MILWAUKEE -- The Sabercats were practically untested tonight, as they breezed through Mount Mary with some precise play.
Karley Johnson led in the kills category, as the sophomore registered 8 kills in 15 attempts. Katie Bender kept her defensive standard high with 17 digs.
Two aces each from Johnson and Bender propelled MBU out to the lead in the opening set. Mount Mary had their share of trouble, though, as multiple hitting errors kept the set out of their reach. Late kills from Claire Hansel, Gabrielle Carpenter, and Kelsey Johnson helped cement the set 1 win, as MBU topped MMU 25-8.
Karley and Kelsey Johnson made for a difficult sister tandem in the second set, as a short run of kills from the two sophomores kept the Sabercats ahead in the early going. Once again, the Blue Angels were sloppy at the net, as they registered 9 hitting errors. A couple of key blocks from the MBU defense kept the hosts' momentum at a minimum as well. When all was said and done in set 2, the Sabercats came away with a 25-13 win.
The theme continued for Mount Mary in the final set, as they continued with their hitting errors. These errors amounted to 27 points in the match for the Sabercats. Late kills from Madeline Suderman and Alexis Bueltel helped the Sabercats over the proverbial finish line, and Karley Johnson capped off an error-free hitting display to secure the win for Maranatha.
Next up for the Sabercats is tomorrow's Edgewood Triangular in Madison, Wisconsin. Check out the details at mbusabercats.com/composite.
