LEAD

MILWAUKEE -- With a 4-0 win over Mount Mary University this afternoon, the Sabercats are back on track as NCCAA Regionals approaches.

Alexis Sponable scored twice to become Maranatha's second all-time leading goalscorer, and Amy Montgomery and Kseniya Hassenplug added the others on a freezing Wisconsin afternoon.

OVERVIEW

  • Result: Maranatha 4-0 Mount Mary
  • Venue: Mount Mary University
  • Location: Milwaukee
  • Attendance: 91
  • Records: MBU (6-7-0), MMU (3-15-0)

STORY

The scoring began in the 11th minute when Sponable scored a trademark goal from the top of the Blue Angels' penalty area. Sponable turned to get the ball onto her right foot, then fired low and hard to the bottom-left corner, putting her shot out of the reach of the goalkeeper.

Eight minutes later, Hassenplug scored her fourth goal in as many games with a one-touch finish off of a setup from Montgomery. It was all one-way traffic in the first half, and the Sabercats were in the driver's seat going into the locker room after out-shooting MMU 15-1.

Six minutes after the halftime break, Sponable added her second of the day via Sarah Moorewho notched her first career assist when she crossed the ball into the box to Sponable. If the Blue Angels were holding out hope, Sponable put an end to that.

Then with just under 20 minutes left, Montgomery scored her fourth of the season to cap off the scoring and give the Sabercats a needed boost as they look towards the weekend, and beyond that to the NCCAA North Region Tournament.
